RESIDENTIAL ANIMAL KEEPER

We are seeking a Residential Animal Keeper (RAK) to join our dedicated team of passionate animal lovers!

The Three Ring Ranch (3RR) is a 501(c)3 lifetime sanctuary for a wide variety of exotic animals, from primates to bison, in addition to farm and native Hawaiian species. Wde are located in Kailua Kona, HI. 3RR is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) and is a member of the American Sanctuary Association (ASA). 3RR was awarded the GFAS 2022 Wildlife Sanctuary of the Year.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is a great opportunity to learn more about working at a true sanctuary while adding skills to your resume. This is an excellent path for a pre-vet to acceptance into a university DVM program however it also advances a resume in any animal care related field.
Our ideal candidate would be committed to becoming a valuable member of our team, and would be excited to work alongside other staff members to help our organization continue to grow. This position requires a minimum 10-month commitment. Because the position is unpaid and part-time, the RAK will most likely want to maintain part-time employment in Kona. We are able to assist in finding a job that will not conflict with the obligations of the RAK position.

RESPONSIBILITIES (up to 20 hours a week, consisting of

  • Daily animal feeding, watering, enrichment and socialization
  • Daily animal medications, treatments and other health care
  • Daily cleaning of animal houses and outdoor environments
  • Assisting with facility maintenance (lawn, weed, brush)
  • Assisting in maintaining animal records
  • Working closely with the Executive Director and volunteers
  • Maintaining neat and organized work and storage spaces
  • Assisting with animal rescues and transports as needed
  • Assisting with veterinary visits as needed
  • During ED vacation conducting weekly purchases and storage of hay, straw, feed, and other animal supplies
  • During ED vacation hours will increase AND a stipend will be paid

  • Dependable and Reliable – Come to work and be on time. Follow procedures and maintain accurate records related to all aspects of elephant care and all areas of responsibility.
  • Training – Work with Intern Mentor and supervisor to address training needs and develop training plans to ensure ongoing professional development.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • One year of experience in animal care preferred
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain up-to-date proof of Covid vaccination and TB testing
  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English (both written and verbal)
  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence
  • Strong interpersonal skills are necessary
  • Must have health insurance
  • Must be able to consistently lift 50 pounds
  • Must be able to tolerate hay/dust/dander/other allergens
  • Be able to climb, lift, grasp, bend and operate a variety of hand-held tools and equipment
  • Be able to stand for long periods of time, stoop, kneel, crawl, crouch, push, pull and balance
  • Must be able to work in all-weather including heat/humidity and wet or muddy conditions
  • Must have a valid drivers license and some form of transportation (as there is no local public transportation available)
